Water softeners work using a resin bed and ion exchange process:
Hard water enters the softener and passes through a bed of resin beads.
The resin beads are charged with sodium or potassium ions. As hard water passes through, the calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the resin
The now softened water, free of calcium and magnesium, exits the softener, ready for use
After some time, the resin becomes saturated with calcium and magnesium. The system flushes a saltwater (brine) solution through.
Soft water reduces limescale deposits in pipes, appliances, and fixtures, improving their lifespan
Soft water allows soap and detergent to lather better, improving cleaning efficiency
Soft water prevents the drying effects of hard water, making skin and hair feel softer and less irritated
Appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters last longer when operating with soft water
